Nationally, the picture is also looking much better: cases have decreased by 22.2 per cent in the last seven days, and there has also been a 9.9 per cent drop in patients admitted to hospital in the last week (data on January 17).

However, there is a slight concern as hundreds of cases of a sub-variant of Omicron have been detected across the UK, with 97 cases in the South West. The UK Health Security Agency is investigating but says there is “insufficient evidence” to determine whether it causes more severe illness or spreads faster.

In Bristol today, protesters took to the streets to voice their opposition to the vaccine mandate for frontline NHS and social care staff. Around 300 people gathered on College Green this afternoon and marched to Broadmead where the protest fizzled out by 4pm.
