Volunteers will be serving Christmas churros to the homeless this month as part of a project to offer luxury meals to Bristol’s most vulnerable.

Joe Clayton, who runs the Dios Mio Churros food stall, is one of several Bristol chefs and restaurant owners involved in the Caring at Christmas scheme.

The project will provide a pop-up shelter to house up to 60 people each night and feed 100 people a day during the festive period.

As part of the scheme by Caring in Bristol, local restaurants have been invited to get involved and plan the seven-day menu.

Mr Clayton, from Horfield, will be providing the dessert option on two of the days and has set up a GoFundMe page for donations.

“Homelessness is getting worse and worse, and I just wanted to give something back,” the 22-year-old said.

“It’s an issue in Bristol and around the country, and quite topical with the election coming up.

“Churros are what I do for a living and they’re warm comfort food.”

He added that it was “reassuring” that he had already raised almost £200 in donations from members of the public.

Ben Richardson, Caring in Bristol director, previously said he wants to “bridge the gap” between Bristol’s most vulnerable and the luxuries which others enjoy.

“Each year at Caring in Bristol we improve the impact and variety of the service we offer to people experiencing homelessness in Bristol,” he said.

“This year we want to bridge the gap between the luxuries our city enjoys at Christmas and what is on offer to our city’s most vulnerable.”

The pop-up shelter will span three venues in Bristol – the Trinity Centre, The Night Shelter in St Paul’s and Easton Leisure Centre

As well as food and drink, the centres will offer clothing, housing advice and medical care.
