The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has jumped by more than 50 per cent in Bristol in the space of one day, latest figures have revealed.

Public Health England said the confirmed cases in Bristol went up from 13 to 20 on Saturday, March 21.

In Bath and North East Somerset, the number of cases more than doubled in a single day – from five to 11.

There was one extra case in South Gloucestershire – a rise from 13 to 14 – and one more case in North Somerset – from four to five.

The total confirmed cases in a single day topped the 1,000 mark nationally for the first time.

In the past 24 hours, there were 1,035 new cases recorded in just one day, taking the total number of cases so far from just over 4,000 to just over 5,000.

Meanwhile the number of people who died in the past 24 hours from coronavirus in the UK as a whole was 53, bringing the total deaths since the pandemic began to 233.

That means almost a quarter of all the people in Britain who have died from coronavirus, died in the past 24 hours.

The figures mean the total number of deaths has jumped by almost a third in just one day, today.

Public Health England are only confirming cases where patients are officially tested positive for coronavirus – and patients are only generally receiving tests if they are ill enough to be admitted to hospital with the virus.

There are estimated to be hundreds, possibly thousands, of people in Bristol with the virus at home, many of whom don’t even know it.

Health officials, who are only testing the most serious of cases to confirm the presence of the virus, are urging people to stay indoors and have minimum contact with other people, in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.
