Footage has emerged of the moment a suspected gang of motorbike thieves drove the wrong way down the M32.

A police patrol car chased a van filled with stolen bikes for a mile and a half the wrong way down the motorway, around a roundabout the wrong way, and then the wrong way down another dual carriageway.

The incident began in St Werburgh’s on Friday night (October 18), when a member of the public spotted a group of men loading motorbikes into the back of a white Transit van at around 8.30pm.

The pursuit ended in Easton with three men, aged 27, 23 and 22, being arrested on suspicion of theft and later released under investigation.

A witness to the chase, Yatine Boodhoo, has revealed dashcam footage of the moment the van turned the wrong way.

He told Bristol Live: “I was on the M32 going towards Bristol city centre when a white van was tailgating me.

“I couldn’t move out of the way as there was a car to my left, but eventually with enough space between the cars, the van swerved and undertook me.

“That is when I saw the police car following. It was shocking to then see the van turn into the slip lane going the wrong direction.”

Mr Boodhoo added that the time stamp from the dashcam is incorrect, the accurate time of the incident being around 8.30pm.

The chase started when police went to check out reports of theft and spotted the van on the Eastville roundabout, junction 2 of the M32.

The van driver drove away, turning up the exit slip road close to Tesco, and driving the wrong way up onto the M32.

Police officers gave chase, and the van was driven to junction 3 of the motorway for Easton and St Pauls.

The driver then got off the motorway, the wrong way up the entry slip road at junction 3, went round the Easton Way M32 roundabout the wrong way, before heading down Easton Way on the wrong side of the dual carriageway.

The van driver then turned right, the wrong way down the Pennywell Road junction, before finally stopping.

The van was then abandoned, and the three men inside ran off. Police officers gave chase, and caught all three men.

“The van and two suspected stolen motorbikes were recovered,” said a police spokesperson.

“We’d like to thank the member of the public who initially reported this incident to us.

“If anyone has information about the initial theft, or if anyone witnessed a white van driving along the M32 and Easton Way as described above, please call us on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5219241836.”
