Weston-super-Mare’s representative in the Love Island villa this year, Jake Cornish, has dramatically split up with girlfriend Liberty Poole – just four days before the series final on Monday.
The couple were, for a long time, the only one to be ‘officially’ boyfriend and girlfriend after they got together at the very start of the first episode of the programme and embarked on a rollercoaster relationship for the entire series.
But just as Teddy and Faye made their relationship official, Jake and Liberty’s relationship – known by Love Island fans as ‘Jiberty’ – collapsed amid tears and acrimony.
The 24-year-old’s confidence took a hit this week when he was told viewers had voted him the ‘least genuine’ contestant, and he was in the bottom three in the vote for ‘favourite male’, as viewers and increasingly other contestants have begun to doubt just how sincere he is in his relationship with Brummie girl Liberty.
Last week, Jake’s dad went public defending his son, and condemning the social media hate being dished out to the Weston lad, after a dramatic series of episodes that began when the boys were sent to alternative villa Casa Amor, and then returned – ever since then their relationship has been on the rocks.
Then in tonight’s dramatic episode, Liberty began by running off crying out of the villa, telling Faye that she was upset because she didn’t think Jake really wanted to be in their relationship, and wanted to change who she was.
Holding back the tears, Liberty told Faye that she’d finally realised he wasn’t the man for her: “I don’t think we’re right for each other”.
“Something’s gone wrong somewhere,” she told Faye. “I just feel numb. I don’t know what’s going on.”
Then, when Jake arrived, Liberty expressed her feelings that he wasn’t accepting her for who she was – with ‘big heels, red lipsticks and big eyelashes’.
“I feel like I’ve got to be true to myself, and there’s been a change in energy,” she told him. “I feel like I can’t do nothing or say nothing right,” she told him.
“It’s not all about you. I don’t want to continue and feeling like I’ve got to change. You’ve got to love me for who I am or I’m not the girl for you. I’m happy to do that, because if I’m not the girl for you then I hope you find someone different who wears blazer dresses. I just love you for you, and exactly who you are,” she added.
“I don’t feel right in my gut, or myself,” she said later. “I just feel like you’re not into it.”
Jake struggled to salvage the relationship. “I feel like I can’t battle my corner. You see things differently to how I see things. If it’s the case that we’re not right for each other, that’s the case,” he said.
Liberty replied: “I love you for who you are, but I feel like that’s not being reciprocated.”
“I came here to find someone and I thought I found someone,” Jake replied. “Are we saying we’ll go our separate ways, then? Maybe it’s best for us to go our separate ways then,” he said, as they agreed to split. “I’m sorry that you felt like that, and it’s something that I’ll have to work on in the future then. Don’t be hard on yourself,” he agreed.
Liberty then took her microphone off and walked out, leaving Jake went back to the boys to tell them: “Basically, we’re done.”
“I feel like i’ve got nothing left to give her,” he said. “I’m not going to change how I am. It feels like a dagger in my heart. It feels like I’ve lost my right arm. Lib is the only girl I’ve been with in here.”
“I do love Jake and I want to make it work but if it’s at the cost of changing myself to make him happy, I’m not going to do that,” Liberty told the Beach Hut diary room.
Dozens of people took to social media to discuss the explosive split.
One person wrote: “Jake wouldn’t know reassurance if it slapped him in the face.”
Another said: “At first I thought Jake wasn’t genuine but these girls, especially Faye, planted the seed in Lib’s head that Jake doesn’t like her. Lib doesn’t even have a good enough reason to end the relationship.”
Someone else wrote: “Jake if you loved her you would of put up a fight to keep her.”
