For 25 years, two brothers have hosted Bristol’s biggest and most impressive Christmas lights display.

Boasting 50,000 light bulbs and more than 70 huge figures, the illuminated spectacular is so popular people have travelled as far a field as Scotland to witness the festive treat.

Lee and Paul Brailsford started the Brentry display when they were just teenagers and because it’s proven so popular they have just kept adding to their masterpiece.

It now takes two months to set up, but Lee said it is worth all the time and effort because it brings so much Christmas joy to the whole community.

“I used to always be really excited when my dad took me out to see all the lights when I was child,” said Lee.

“This was in the 80s and the lights were nothing like they are these days.

“They always make you excited about Christmas and give you that warm, fuzzy feeling.”

Eight years ago, the brothers started raising money for Bristol’s Children’s Hospital through the Grand Appeal and have now collected almost £70,000.

“Someone suggested to us to start raising money for charity,” explained Lee.

“We thought it was a good idea but had no idea we would raise so much.

“I think one year we raised £11,500 in one month. The hospital helps so many people so it seemed like a good choice.”

In 2016, the brothers decided to scrap hosting a big switch-on event because it took too much organising.

But to celebrate their 25th anniversary they decided to stage one more ‘mini switch-on’ which was attended by 300 revellers at the extremely festive home on Trevisa Grove on Sunday, December 1.

“It was a good size but nothing like what it used to be,” said Lee, 42.

“We used to have to apply for road closures, toilets, stewards, it all became too much.

“We get a lot of people coming to look round. A lot of people hear about us on Facebook and then plan their trips around calling by.”

And the brothers have now switched to 95 per cent LED lightning to ensure their display is environmentally friendly.

Speaking about the huge amount collected for the Grand Appeal, Kate Jones, who works as the charity’s senior fundraiser, said the money has helped more than 100 different projects.

From new equipment in hospitals to hiring specialist workers such as play therapist, Kate said the cash has had a massive impact on Bristol’s sick children.

“The lights are really amazing,” said Kate.

“They’re really magical. It’s really hard to describe just how impressive they are, people have to go and look themselves.”
