Nowadays even the most basic of rail journeys can leave a hefty dent in your finances.

With overcrowded carriages and stuffy conditions, the relative tranquility of the first class compartment can seem like a distant dream. After all, what percentage of us consider paying out to travel in style.

However, the launch of a new app on the Great Western Railway network seeks to change the way we view first class travel – giving passengers the opportunity to upgrade to premium seats for just £10.

Iain Griffin, co-founder and CEO of Seatfrog, said: “At Seatfrog we want people to fall back in love with train travel and for the adventure of the journey to be enjoyed, not endured. With more Brits than ever before choosing to take a short break in the UK, upgrading to First Class can kick start an amazing holiday.

“As we rapidly expand across Europe, I’m really excited to welcome Great Western Railway as our latest partner. Together we will give customers the opportunity to take their journey beyond the ordinary this summer.”

With more people than ever before – an estimated 37million Brits this summer alone – opting to enjoy a ‘staycation’, the Seatfrog app will launch on GWR this Monday (August 19).

In a survey carried out by Seatfrog it was revealed that Cornwall and Devon came out in first a second place respectively as top UK destinatons, with Dorset coming in fourth, the Cotswolds sixth, and Bath Spa ninth.

GWR sales and marketing director Phil Delaney said: “Whatever the reason for your journey, whether you’re travelling to a business meeting, catching up with old friends, or going on an adventure to somewhere new, the Seatfrog app lets you participate in an auction to access First Class at potentially lower cost.”

The Seatfrog app allows passengers to bid against each other in live auctions for the first class seats, or ‘buy it now’ and bag an empty seat instantly.

Lucky winners will receive the upgraded tickets sent straight to their phone, giving them access to GWR’s premium experience, which includes complementary food and drink, use of first class lounges, and spacious seats.

Seatfrog is available to download now from the App Store for both iOS and Android devices.
