A website has been launched to help organise people who want to donate time or money to fellow Bristolians during the coronavirus outbreak.
Set up by Bristol City Council, Can Do Bristol is a listings website which showcases all volunteering opportunities in Bristol and is now being used by community groups in the city to promote the activities where help is needed.
Since cases of coronavirus began to appear in the UK, Bristollians have been stepping forward to offer their help.
The surge of support for communities has been welcomed by officials, and people are being asked to sign up and pledge their support so this effort can be co-ordinated, for maximum effect.
Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: “We are blessed by the swell of support and volunteerism we’re seeing across the city.
“Our number one priority as a city must be to ensure support is in place for our most vulnerable citizens – whether that be through council services or community led help.
“I’d like to recommend that all Bristol community groups use the Can Do website to find volunteers and ensure we are effectively using this collective goodwill to support Bristol through this crisis.”
Christina Gray, Director of Public Health in Bristol said: “These sites are the best ways to coordinate the wealth of community spirit Bristolians have exhibited over recent days.
“I’d urge anyone who wants to volunteer time to check in with Can Do Bristol first, and if they are able to donate to do so through the Coronavirus 2020 Response Fund.”
Other initiatives across the city
In addition, the Quartet Community Foundation provides a place for people in the West of England to donate money to help others.
Quartet have set up the Coronavirus 2020 Response Fund solely to support the West of England’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sue Turner, CEO at Quartet Community Foundation said: “Your generous donation will help some of our most disadvantaged communities in the coming months and will support the many hundreds of amazing local causes that do so much all year round.
“Thank you for your support, together we can take life changing action.”
