I tried YO! Sushi’s intriguing new Doritos dish at Bristol branch

YO! Sushi and Doritos have joined forces for a year-long collaboration, and the first creation from the unlikely partnership is available in restaurants now.

The YO! Doritos Onigiri Katsu Krunch launched at various YO! restaurants across the UK, including Bristol, earlier this month to coincide with National Curry Week.

YO! hopes the dish will allow customers to “enjoy two lunchtime favourites in one hybrid dish that’s bursting with flavour”.

This new collaborative offering (priced at £5.25) comprises a layer of shredded spicy chicken wrapped in sushi rice and nori flakes, coated in a layer of crushed Doritos Chilli Heatwave, which is then fried to give it that added crunch.

For veggies there’s a spicy shiitake mushroom version – priced slightly cheaper at £4.95 – which YO! claims is “just as indulgent and an explosion of colour on your taste buds”.

It’s served in a pool of katsu sauce and topped with pickled red and spring onions, and the dish is also shaped like a triangular Doritos crisp to add to the fun – but is it just a gimmick or actually an inspired coming together of two renowned brands? To find out, I headed to the chain’s Cabot Circus branch to give it a try.

We visited on a Monday afternoon when there was a smattering of diners enjoying their lunch breaks, and the first thing we noticed after being shown to our designated section of the snaking conveyor belt by the less-than-enthusiastic waitress was that the restaurant could do with a clean.

There were smudges and stains on the Perspex screen separating us from our neighbouring diners and remnants of a historic meal next to the conveyor belt which looked like it had been there since before that morning.

We were a little worried the somewhat tatty appearance would be reflected in the food, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. We ordered a selection of dishes from the reasonably priced menu – including the Doritos collaboration – and they were all impressive.

The pick of the bunch was the beef teriyaki, which was delightfully crispy as good teriyaki should be with just the right amount of kick.

The special edition Onigiri Katsu Krunch, which will be on the menu for the next year, was also tasty. It was served in the shape of a triangle as advertised and positioned upright to accentuate this, which gave it a slightly odd appearance, but there was definitely nothing wrong with the taste.

If I hadn’t had prior knowledge that the crumbs encasing it were crushed Doritos crisps, I probably wouldn’t have guessed, which is possibly a good thing.

While it was decent enough I don’t really think the addition of the Doritos added much, and I’d probably go for a regular chicken katsu curry if I return to YO! Sushi, which I wouldn’t hesitate to do despite the mediocre service and slightly unkempt nature of the restaurant.
