Lidl wants to open seven new supermarkets in the Bristol area

Lidl is looking to open seven new supermarkets in the Bristol area as part of a national expansion which could see them double the number of stores.

The supermarket – which wants to have 1,000 stores by the end of 2023 – has published a list of key areas across Great Britain where it is interested in acquiring sites for potential store development.

As part of this, Lidl is looking to open more than 60 supermarkets across the whole of the South West.

In the Bristol area, the chain is looking to open new supermarkets in Bradley Stoke, Clifton, Downend/Staple Hill, Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym, Whitchurch and Keynsham.

Lidl also wants to relocate its stores in Bedminster, Emersons Green and Fishponds and is looking for new sites in those locations.

Looking at the wider region, the supermarket giant is also looking to relocate its Clevedon store and wants to open new supermarkets in central Weston-super-Mare and Nailsea.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB said: “We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation.

“Despite the challenges of the past year, we still managed to meet our ambitious target of opening, on average, one new store per week across Great Britain.

“We are looking forward to opening more stores throughout the country and welcoming new colleagues in the coming months and years, so that more communities can access quality food at the lowest prices on the market.”
