Motorists heading towards Devon and Cornwall have been left facing delays of up to 45 minutes following an earlier accident near Cribbs Causeway.
According to traffic camera pictures, there are a staggering 26 miles of queues on the M5 southbound, stretching between J14 and J26 past Taunton.
There is also heavy traffic on the M4, with delays of up to 35 minutes on the approach to the Severn Crossing.
Although the congestion has in part been caused by the earlier incident, the lengthy wait times are being exacerbated by usual heavy Friday traffic – with the sun shining, routes into Wales and the West Country are busy with those looking to escape for the weekend.
