Live updates: Severn Bridge lashed by Storm Arwen is closed in both directions

The Severn Bridge has been closed in both directions as 80mph winds brought in by Storm Arwen continue to lash South West Wales and the Severn Estuary.

A Met Office Amber warning is in place with wind speeds expected to reach over 80mph in the region until 9am today.

As wind speeds picked up past 80mph National Highways South East have closed the Severn Bridge over the estuary between J1 and J2 and motorists are advised to use the M4 Prince of Wales bridge as an alternative crossing.

Motorists are warned to drive with caution and try and avoid the area if possible.

National Highways South East said: “The M48 Severn Bridge between England and Wales is closed in both directions due to strong winds.

“Vehicles are advised to use the M4 Prince of Wales Second Severn Crossing as an alternative route and allow additional time for their journey.”
