Here they are – the 20 finalists in the competition to find Bristol’s Lockdown Dog Hero.

Drawing up a shortlist was no easy task – we were inundated with hundreds of entries from readers each sharing their own inspirational stories explaining exactly why their family pets had been lockdown lifesavers.

Many of them made us laugh, a fair few made us shed a tear but all of them confirmed how our dogs are central to our lives, especially during these difficult months, and how each of every one of them is a winner.

It has been a privilege to read their stories and celebrate their loyalty, devotion and ability to make us smile even when the going was tough.

At home our pet dogs have always ruled the roost – but in these unprecedented times they have also become valuable work colleagues, stars of our social media accounts, enthusiastic class members in our makeshift home schools and the bond bringing families, and communities, together.

That’s why we launched the competition – to recognise and applaud their companionship, heroics and playfulness – and simply to say thank you for helping us stay healthy and sane.

But now it’s time to vote for our local winner – the lucky dog will win a £100 Butcher’s voucher, courtesy of our partners family-run food for dogs company Butcher’s, and a place in the grand final to find Britain’s ultimate Lockdown Dog Hero.

The winner of that competition wins a year’s supply of Butcher’s and a £1,500 towards a dog-friendly break.

Votes to find Bristol’s winner open at 5am on Tuesday, June 9, and close at midnight on June 10.

Here’s wishing all our finalists the best of luck and thank you again for entering and sharing your stories with us.
