The M5 northbound in Bristol has been closed following a road traffic collision at the junction of the M5 junction 18 and the A4.

Both lanes have been closed. A diversion has been put in place and traffic is coping well.

National Highways has described the incident as “severe”. It says the event is expected to clear and normal traffic conditions are likely to resume between 3.45am and 4am.

Initial reports of the incident came in just after midnight.

An update at 2.04am from traffic monitoring service Inrix said: “M5 Northbound blocked due to accident at J18 M49. Traffic is coping well.

“Diversion – via the slip roads, which means heading on to exit slip road, on to the spur road, then exit the spur road, go around the roundabout, back on to the spur road, then exit back on to the M5 Northbound.”
