M5 to be ‘closed for most of the day’ following lorry crash

m5 to be closed for most of the day following lorry crash - M5 to be 'closed for most of the day' following lorry crash

A serious collision involving a lorry overturning across the motorway will close the M5 ‘for most of the day’.

The crash happened just after 8am this morning (Sunday, January 17) at the M4/M5 Almondsbury interchange.

It is believed the crash took place just as traffic from the M4 joins the main northbound M5 carriageway, and a lorry has overturned and crashed through the central reservation onto the southbound side.

We will bring updates to the severity of this collision in our updates blog here, but Highways England have said they expect the motorway at this point to be closed for a long time.

“We expect this closure to be in place for most of the day, and if you are travelling, please seek alternative routes,” said a Highways England spokesperson.

“Delays are likely on the approach to the closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes. Please allow extra time for your journey if travelling in the area or consider alternative routes,” he added.

The M5 has effectively been closed from junction 14 for Falfield in South Gloucestershire, all the way through junction 15 the Almondsbury interchange, to junction 16 for Thornbury and Aztec West.

A number of different diversions have now been set up for travellers on the M5 and the M4 who are affected by this. (see below)

M5 Northbound

Motorists are being directed off the M5 at junction 16 for Thornbury and then directed up the A38 past Thornbury until they reach the B4509, which will take them to junction 14 for the M5 again.

M5 Southbound

The same diversion, but in reverse. Motorists approaching Bristol from Gloucestershire on the southbound M5 are being directed off the motorway at junction 14, and then right onto the A38, down through Thornbury and then back onto the M5 at junction 16 for Aztec West. Any motorists who had wanted to get onto the M4 before then, are instructed to follow diversions for the M4.

M4 eastbound

Traffic on the M5 north that wanted to turn onto the M4 is being diverted off the M5 at junction 16, and then down the A38 to Filton and along the A4174 Avon Ring Road until they rejoin the motorway network at the M32.
