M5 under severe weather warning – difficult driving conditions expected

Drivers in parts of the South West have been warned to expect some difficult conditions on the roads..

A Met Office severe weather alert for fog was issued at 3.58am and will be in place until 10am on Thursday (October 14).

A large stretch of the M5 is covered by the warning, which covers much of Somerset as well as Devon, Cornwall and parts of Dorset.

As well as drivers being told to expect the difficult driving conditions, people using bus and train services could also experience delays.

Bristol is not covered by the warning zone, but any motorists heading further south have been told that visibility could be low.

The chief forecaster said: “Fog patches may be dense in places to begin with today with visibility dropping below 100 metres at times and perhaps below 50 metres in a few places.

“Much of the fog will be found away from hills and moors. Most of this fog will lift and clear by mid-morning, but a few stubborn patches may linger until late morning.”

The warning covers from just north of Wells in Somerset, to east of of Sturminster Newton

Weymouth and much of the rest of the South West is in the yellow warning zone.

South West Met Office forecast

Today: Early fog patches, dense in places, slowly clearing to leave another day of variable and at times large amounts of cloud, but also a few sunny spells. Feeling warm in any sunshine, with a gentle westerly breeze. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy through the evening and overnight, with just a few clear spells. Some patchy rain will move into northern areas later in the night. Minimum temperature 9 °C.

Friday: Plenty of cloud again, with occasional light rain, especially further north and east. Somewhat cooler than recent days across the north of the region. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: A cool start to Saturday where skies are clear, but steadily turning cloudier and milder again. Mostly cloudy on Sunday, then more unsettled and breezier next week.
