Emergency services have been dealing with a major fire at an empty old people’s home in Bristol.

Firefighters from across the city have rushed to a location which is thought to be the former Rockwell elderly people’s home in Lawrence Weston, to tackle a major fire.

Five fire appliances and a turntable ladder are at the scene and Avon Fire and Rescue said that ‘multiple calls from the public’ had alerted them to the scene.

The plume of smoke from the blaze can be seen across Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston and from the M5 motorway.

The fire is understood to have started at around 7.45pm at the old people’s home in Corbet Close. It has been closed and boarded up for a number of years.

Fire appliances from Avonmouth, Southmead, Bedminster and Temple fire stations all attended the fire.

Five firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze initially, using two hose reels.

Police are also in attendance and a large crowd of locals has gathered to watch the operation.
