A white van driver reportedly pulled a large knife on an off-duty police officer in broad daylight last weekend.

Police are appealing for witnesses after hearing that the van driver confronted the officer in Staple Hill, Bristol, on Sunday afternoon (December 8).

The incident happened at around 1.45pm, according to police, after the van driver overshot the junction of Teewell Hill, Gloucester Road and Station Road.

The van driver then got out and opened the door of another driver’s car while being “verbally aggressive”, police say, and went on to produce a “large knife”.

When the car driver identified himself as an off-duty officer, the van driver made off at speed, say police.

A 35-year-old man was arrested later that day and released under investigation.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “Officers are keen to trace any independent witnesses and anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage showing the incident.

“Police are especially keen to speak to a man driving a small blue Peugeot, with a woman passenger. The pair, said to be in their sixties, were at the junction at the time and are believed to have seen the altercation.

“If you can help get in touch with police through www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5219283238.

“Alternatively ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call.”
