A recruitment consultant from Bristol appeared on Beat The Chasers tonight (April 28) – and won £10,000.
Joel George, who says he entered as a joke, bagged the money after going head to head with three Chasers during the ITV quiz series this evening (Tuesday).
He beat Jenny Ryan, Shaun Wallace and Mark Labbett with just 27 seconds to spare.
He told the programme’s producers he plans to spend the cash on travelling to Australia once the coronavirus pandemic has cleared.
To prepare for his moment in the limelight, Joel said he watched other quiz shows .
But his training failed him when he was asked about quotes printed on £5 notes. He admitted he didn’t know they had anything written on them.
Beat the Chase sees contestants take on two, three, four or all five Chasers at once.
The spin-off show from The Chase, which is still hosted by Bradley Walsh, aired for the first time on Monday at 9pm.
Contestants have to choose how many Chasers to face with the incentive being far greater quantities of cash for facing more of them.
After appearing on the tense show, Joel answered a series of questions put to him by Beat the Chaser’s producers.
Here’s what he said:
Why did you apply to Beat The Chasers?
“It more just banter, to see if it happened. When I got the audition I was just sort of riding it to see how far it went – and then I made it on the show!”
How did you prepare?
“I just watched The Chase and other general knowledge stuff to revise. Tipping Point and the like. Usually my general knowledge is quite good, so I was quite confident at first. But when I went to the studio and saw the set, I got quite nervous then. But as we were actually doing it, I sort of forgot where I was and got zoned into it.”
Which Chasers in particular were you excited to play against?
“Not going to lie, I really didn’t want to face ‘The Beast’. When his light came on to play three Chasers, I was like, ‘Oh, no!’ because that kind of meant I had to take him on, because my housemates wouldn’t let me live it down if I only took on two Chasers.
“But I really wanted to face Shaun. When I put my glasses on my housemates say he could be my dad. So, I thought it would be good if I took him on and beat him.”
What was it like meeting host Bradley Walsh?
“He was cool. He was as funny in person as he is on TV. He helped with my nerves a bit.
“Although, I was too distracted by everything to be too nervous. Main thing I was worried about was tripping down the stairs to get on stage! But I couldn’t see the crowd as they were behind me and I just focussed on Bradley and zoned in on the questions.”
Any questions you got wrong that still play on your mind?
“On my Cash Builder round there was a question I got wrong about a quote written on a £5 note. I honestly didn’t even know there were quotes on money. It was a quote from Winston Churchill.
“In all honesty, I just hadn’t said ‘B’ yet, so I just said, ‘B £10’ and it was actually £5. So that one has stuck with me. I’ve had a look on the notes now!”
You won with 27 seconds left, taking on 3 Chasers, do you wish you’d taken on more?
“Yeah. The next highest was to go for £25k. I wish I’d gone for that. But hindsight’s 20/20 I guess.”
How will you spend the winnings – still planning a road trip when you can?
“All things considered, I won’t be going yet… but I’ve put some money in my savings and then hopefully I’ll go away when I can to Australia.”
What do your friends and family think?
“When I told my housemates they were buzzing and over the moon. When I told my mum and dad they didn’t believe me. My sister has asked for a new Chanel bag as it’s her birthday coming up. I said I’ll think about it.”
