Two people die with Covid in Bristol region as cases rise

There have been two Covid-related deaths confirmed across the Bristol region in the latest daily figures.

One death was reported in North Somerset over the past 24 hours, Government data shows.

And one Covid patient died in South Gloucestershire.

There have been 57 new cases of the virus confirmed across all four local authorities that make up the West of England.

Bristol reported the biggest rise of 37, while North Somerset recorded ten.

This comes after Public Health England (PHE) confirmed there have been 59 cases of the Indian variant recorded in Bristol.

The variant of coronavirus first identified in India is now the dominant strain in the UK.

Cases of the variant have almost doubled in one week in Bristol – seven days ago 28 Covid-19 cases were identified.

In today’s coronavirus figures, South Gloucestershire recorded seven and Bath and North East Somerset recorded three.

The new cases in the Bristol region are part of a total of 6,238 recorded across the UK in the last 24 hours, bringing the nationwide total to 4,506,018.

The number of positive test results in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results in brackets.

  • Bristol – 31,246 (+37)
  • North Somerset – 10,185 (+10)
  • South Gloucestershire – 15,369 (+7)
  • Bath and North East Somerset – 8,339 (+3)

Covid death breakdown for each area

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test result in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new deaths in brackets.

  • Bristol – 471 (-)
  • North Somerset – 315 (+1)
  • South Gloucestershire – 354 (+1)
  • Bath and North East Somerset – 218 (-)

UK figures

There were 11 deaths recorded today, within 28 days of a positive test, across the UK.

Over 127,000 have died of coronavirus since the pandemic began, but the daily number of fatalities has been on the decline since the second peak on January 19.

There were also 123 people admitted to hospital across the UK in the latest figures, with the total number of people now in hospital with the virus sitting at 954. There are 134 patients in mechanical ventilation beds.

As things stand, the number of people who have received their first vaccine dose is nearly 40 million, with the current total sitting at 39,949,694.

There have also now been over 26.7 million who have received their second jab.
