Wanted man on the run after police chase resulted in crash

Police have explained why a helicopter was circling over Bristol last night.

Avon and Somerset Police was on the hunt for a man wanted by Gloucestershire Police.

Officers were alerted that a vehicle linked to the man was headed to Bristol, but a police chase saw the car crash into a narrow footpath in Henbury.

Dog handlers and a police helicopter were roped in to try and find the suspect, but they found no trace of him.

One witness said she saw a helicopter circling above Bristol Hill in Brislington just after midnight.

Police said in a statement: “Avon and Somerset Police were alerted on Thursday 25 November that a vehicle linked to a man wanted by Gloucestershire Police was possibly headed to Bristol.

“The car, an Audi A3, was spotted in Bristol and driven off from police in Wells Road at about 11.20pm on Thursday.

“It was found crashed in a narrow footpath off Davids Road, Henbury.

“Despite a search of the area by units on the ground, supported by dog handlers and the National Police Air Service helicopter, there was no trace of the suspect.”
