A Bristol woman says she is “in shock” after her beloved cat was shot in the leg with a BB gun.

Louise Grange, of Bradley Stoke, is attempting to raise £2,000 to cover the costs of the surgery her pet requires to repair the fracture.

She forked out £650 for the 14-month-old, named Tipsy, to have initial treatment and X-rays at Vets4Pets Filton on Saturday (April 24) but needs financial support to pay for the operation and after care.

The 44-year-old, who was recently furloughed from her job as an implementation manager due to Covid-19, said she thought Tipsy had been run over at first.

“Tipsy came in the house having been outside and started scratching, which is unlike her,” she said. “I looked at her face and could instantly tell something was wrong.

“She jumped up on the bed and started yelping, and when she moved I saw there was blood on the duvet cover but I couldn’t work out where it was coming from.

“I thought she’d been run over and drove her to the vets in Filton. I was in bits with tears streaming down my face on the way there. Tipsy is more than a pet, she’s part of the family.”

“I couldn’t believe it, I was in shock”

Later that day Louise got a call from the veterinary practice saying she had to come in and sign some forms, as Tipsy needed to be sedated and X-rayed.

When she arrived she was informed Tipsy had been shot in the leg.

“When the vet told me what had happened I couldn’t believe it, I was in shock,” said Louise, who does not have pet insurance.

“I couldn’t believe anyone in Bradley Stoke, or anywhere for that matter, would carry a BB gun around with them and do something as vile as this.

“The gun must have been really powerful as the pellet was lodged in Tipsy’s leg. What if it had hit a child?

“The vets reported it to the police as they were just as disgusted as I was that somebody would do something like this.”

Louise said the vets have offered to carry out the surgery on Monday before receiving full payment, as the fix needs to be made urgently.

She said she “can’t thank them enough” for this offer as Tipsy “means the world” to her and her mum Patricia, who lives with her at her Bradley Stoke home.

Until the operation tomorrow (Monday, April 27) Tipsy must be kept in a cage on painkillers, with her sister Knibsy, who Louise picked up from the same litter when they were both eight weeks old, doing her best to comfort her.

Fundraiser to help pay for surgery costs

Louise hopes to raise £2,000 to help pay for the cost of Tipsy’s surgery, which will be paid to Vets4Pets Filton retrospectively.

“I didn’t plan to set up a fundraising page at first but people in the Bradley Stoke Journal Facebook group suggested it after I reported Tipsy had been shot in there,” Louise said.

“From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and everyone who is thinking of donating. You don’t know how much it means to me and my mum.

“We are eternally grateful, especially as we’re living in uncertain times at the moment.”

So far nearly £300 has been raised towards the cat’s surgery costs. If you would like to donate, visit the fundraiser page.
