Would you miss Facebook if it disappeared forever? Have your say in our survey

Hundreds of thousands of people were left frustrated on Monday night as Facebook, and its other platforms Instagram and Whatapp went down across the globe.

Although they returned later on that night, connection was down for around six hours in total, sending the internet into chaos for most of the evening.

This morning, Facebook apologised for the outage in a statement, blaming a faulty configuration change which affected the companies internal tools.

As well as affecting social lives, the outage was also a blow to many companies that use Facebook’s communication services for business, including news organisations that heavily rely on sites to inform their readers.

As users flocked to other apps such as Twitter and Tiktok to mock the situation, it became even more apparent how much dependant we are on social media sites as a nation.

Facebook’s official statement said: “To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by today’s outage across our platforms. We’ve been working as hard as we can to restore access, and our systems are now back up and running. The underlying cause of this outage also impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem.”

The company also reassured users that user data was not compromised as a result of the outage, adding: “People and businesses around the world rely on us everyday to stay connected. We understand the impact outages like these have on people’s lives, and our responsibility to keep people informed about disruptions to our services. We apologize to all those affected, and we’re working to understand more about what happened today so we can continue to make our infrastructure more resilient.”
