When Kate Van der Meulen saw a vintage caravan advertised on Facebook Marketplace in 2019, she decided to buy it with hardly a moment’s thought.
Little did she know how much her life would change following the purchase.
After restoring the caravan Kate – who lives in Bridgend, Stonehouse with her husband and two daughters – realised just how much she had enjoyed the whole experience.
When the pandemic hit, she took the opportunity to leave her much-loved job in marketing to forge a new career in interior design.
Kate then investigated into doing an online course before finding a diploma.
Fast forward to 2022 and she is now CEO of her own company, Kate VDM Interior Design.
The company offers a range of services, from single room colour consultations to whole room re-design schemes which cover both residential settings and small commercial businesses.
Passion for revamp
“I did about 30 minutes research and made the owner of the caravan an offer,” Kate said.
“I had such passion for the caravan project and I realised I had relished every minute of it.
“It was my vision and I was in total control from start to finish.
“I had absolutely no knowledge of caravans and I don’t even like camping but I thought it would be an adventure.
“I had to do my research to find out what the caravan would have looked like originally and in the end we had really good fun restoring it for the rental market.
“I am passionate about creating homes that have meaning and a story, that represent the homes’ owners and their lifestyles.
“Good design can be stylish, affordable, as well as sustainable.
“I like my spaces to also feel calm and comfortable, bringing in colour to add interest and personality.
“I tend to use accents of colour around the room, in the form of a statement sofa or chair, cushions or ceramics.”
