A STROUD MAN broke into a 71-year-old woman’s home in the dead of night while she was asleep upstairs and stole various items, a court was told today

John Munson, 56, of Cable Court, Stroud pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates Court to burglary on October 2.

Munson broke into a house in the town centre while the occupier was upstairs asleep, and he stole a tin of cakes, a coat and a bag containing a hat, gloves and scarf, in total valued at £155, the court heard

Prosecuting lawyer Sonia Alford said: “The victim lives alone and at 8am she was woken up by a concerned neighbour who noticed that her front door was open.

“When she walked into her kitchen she realised that she had been burgled.

“She found blood in the hallway.”

The blood was later analysed and the DNA matched that of the defendant and he was subsequently arrested.

Defending lawyer Joan Hughes said: “The front door was unlocked and my client says that he was very drunk and thought it was his friend’s home so he just walked in.”

Magistrates sent the case to Gloucester Crown Court for sentence on January 23, 2020 and Munson was granted conditional bail until then.
