A CIRENCESTER couple have raised more than £30,000 for the NHS by shaving their heads.
Leslie Ferrar, 64, and David Unwin, 68, braved the shave on Friday to raise money for the NHS Charities Together Covid-19 appeal.
So far they have raised just over £32,000 through their fundraising page, with money still coming in.
Leslie said: “We’ve volunteered to shop for people and have sent material for scrubs, but we decided we wanted to do a bit more if we could.
“I wanted to do something completely unexpected but important.
“We decided to do it on David’s 68th birthday on Friday, to make it a memorable occasion.
“It was obviously a bit more drastic for one of us than the other, so David also shaved his chest and back!”
The couple say they have been overwhelmed and humbled by the response since launching the fundraising page.
“It’s just fantastic to raise so much money for the NHS, that’s what it is all about, it is so important,” Leslie said.
“Some people asked to pay double for me not to shave!
“We would like to say thank you to family, friends, colleagues, and to the people who don’t even know us who donated, it means so much, and we are very grateful.”
“The NHS is just being so marvellous and the more we can raise the better!”
The appeal is aiming to raise £100 million to provide food deliveries, refreshments, wash kits, parking, accommodation costs and more for NHS staff and volunteers. So far the appeal has raised over £15 million.
