THE CROWN and Sceptre has beaten off stiff competition to be named the Stroud News and Journal’s Pub of the Year 2019.

Landlord Rodda Thomas said he was ‘chuffed to bits’ at the news.

SNJ reporter Matty Airey presented Rodda with the winners trophy at the Horns Road pub on Saturday.

He can also now look forward to a two-night stay at the Melbourne Lodge in Hertfordshire as part of the prize.

“I’d like to thank all our customers for voting for us,” said Rodda.

“The award is particularly welcome for my hard working team, especially Katy and Ruan, my son, and the cleaners.

“They make a lot of effort and it wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Beloved for its wide selection of real ales, fantastic food and packed line-up of live entertainment including comedy and music, The Crown and Sceptre was hugely popular with SNJ readers.

It overcame fierce competition from five other treasured locals which made the pub of the year shortlist – the Old Badger Inn in Eastington, the Old Fleece in Woodchester, the Prince Albert in Rodborough, the Red Lion in Arlingham and the Ship Inn in Brimscombe.

Rodda added: “It’s nice to have this recognition in what is our tenth year.

“We opened on July 21, 2009 and we’ve been open every day since.

“We’ve got lots of great stuff coming up this year – including our Cornish Beer and Cider Festival, from April 19 to 22, with live music and Stroud Unplugged.

“And our Outer Fringe will be returning as part of this year’s Stroud Fringe, from August 23 to 25.

“We’ll be taking part in the Yard Trail on August 26 too, with lots of stalls in our giant yurt.

“Do come along and join us.”
