A SUSPECTED grenade fished out of the river at Lechlade today has been destroyed in a controlled explosion.
A man who was fishing with a magnet near to the Halfpenny Bridge pulled the device out of the River Thames.
As a safety precaution road closures – on the A361 Lechlade Road from the town to the Bridge House Campsite – were put in place while officers awaited the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
The Riverside pub was also evacuated.
A force spokeswoman said: “The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has attended and the grenade destroyed in a controlled explosion.
“Closures are being lifted and local residents will be pleased to hear that The Riverside pub has been reopened.”
