There is congestion around the centre of Nailsworth this evening after thunder, lightning and heavy rain battered the Five Valleys.

Firefighters were called to the town centre to deal with flooding and there is heavy traffic on the Stroud Road heading towards the centre of the town.

Witnesses have also said Inchbrook Hill is blocked with traffic.

Mayor of Nailsworth Cllr Jonathan Duckworth said shops in the town centre had been flooded.

Earlier flooding was particularly bad near to the Shell garage but it has since reopened.

Stroud Police earlier warned drivers to take care as the roads across the district are ‘rather wet’.

The Met Office has issued two severe weather warnings for the area for this afternoon and evening.
