At the time of writing the identity of our next Prime Minister is unknown although Rishi Sunak has most MP’s votes, including that of Stroud’s MP Siobhan Baillie.
The opposition parties are shouting from the rooftops that with three Tory PM’s in three months there should be a General Election, knowing full well their wish will not be granted. The Conservatives are so far behind in the polls that they would not volunteer for a political wipe-out. Although of course they will say they need the two years remaining of this parliament to steady the ship from its current economic turmoil and put the UK back on an even keel.
Inwardly Labour might be grateful of this gap because they know there is no magic wand to sort out it out, just different tactics, and will be happy to let the Tories take all the flak.
History has shown that Labour will win next General Election: – no political party has ever won five successive Elections and all parties of government become jaded after ten years in power. This Conservative government has won 4 elections (2010, 2015, 2017 & 2019) and by 2024 will have been in power for 14 years.
Labour will obviously target Stroud, which at one time was known as a Tory stronghold but is now considered a swing seat. Should Ms Baillie stand again she knows that as with all sitting MPs she will attract some floating voters who always vote for the sitting MP. And Stroud Labour will have that cross knowing the local party is in as much disarray as the Tory government and that their selected candidate will be considered second choice.
Interesting times ahead in our constituency.
