ITV have still not revealed the exact “legal reasons” why Fred and Rose West: The Real Story was postponed the 11th hour.

But viewers were left confused and annoyed when the documentary, which reportedly suggests Rose was as violent as her husband, was replaced with a repeat programme about Sir Trevor meeting inmates on Death Row.

The widely anticipated programme was due to go out at 9pm on Thursday, January 31.

Original speculation that Rose’s lawyers stopped the programme because Sir Trevor, 79, set out prove she was “deeply involved” just before a parole board hearing isn’t thought to be true.

Both the police and county council swiftly denied some social media rumours that the authorities in Gloucesteshire had blocked the programme.

But eagle-eyed viewers will be looking at how the programme that goes out compares to the stories about the documentary in the run-up to January 31.

There were several stories about what would be included with suggestions Sir Trevor would reveal new details about how the couple managed to get away with torture, rape and murder for so long.

Originally the documentary contained interviews with Sir Trevor speaking to some of those involved in the case for the first time, including Rose’s original trial lawyer and lodger Jayne Hamer.

On the day it was first due to be aired the daytime TV show This Morning carried the very first television interview with the sisters of victim Juanita Mott, who vanished aged 18 in 1975.

ITV remain tight-lipped and say they have nothing to add to the original statement: “Broadcast has been postponed for legal reasons and the film will be scheduled for a later date.”

But Sir Trevor visited the site of West’s home at Cromwell Street i n Gloucester while making the programme which is thought to be more in depth than others.

Rose, who is now in HMP Low Newton in Durham, was 15 and Fred was 27 when they met in Cheltenham and went on a killing spree that included their daughter Heather.

Fred West hanged himself in jail on New Year’s Day 1995 while awaiting trial for 12 murders.

The same year Rose was convicted of 10 murders at Winchester Crown Court and jailed for life.
