Sashon Lewis, aged 39, of Chestnut Close, Hardwicke, has been charged under common law and the Serious Crime Act 2015.
He is accused of holding a woman against her will on May 6 last year in Gloucester.
He is also accused of intentionally strangling the same woman on the same day.
Lewis is due to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (March 6).
The kidnapping charge is indictable which means it will be sent to the crown court.
