A MAN has been arrested after packets of suspected drugs were found in a vehicle following a crash on the A419 earlier today.

Police were called to a crash involving two cars on the A419 close to the Castle Eaton turn-off, at around 9.40am.

A silver Ford Fiesta and a silver Kia Cee’d, which were both travelling on the southbound carriageway were involved.

Fortunately, nobody was injured, but when officers searched the Ford Fiesta they discovered packets of what is believed to be amphetamines.

A 26-year-old from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the legal alcohol limit, driving while over the specified limit of a controlled drug, driving while unfit through drugs and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

PC Craig Beales, from Swindon Community Policing Team, said: “Thankfully this didn’t turn out to be a serious collision and nobody was hurt.

“But it was a great find by the attending officers, who quickly picked up on the driver’s demeanour and carried out a thorough search of the vehicle, locating these drugs.

“Obviously, our enquiries are at an early stage, but this case appears to highlight the ongoing issue of illegal drugs being brought into our county from elsewhere and we will continue to take action to tackle the problem.”
