A MAN from Cumbria has been charged in connection with a rape which happened in Cheltenham over 30 years ago.
Paul Shakespeare, aged 66 and of Scaleby Close, Upperby in Carlisle has been charged with one count of rape and one count of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
It is alleged he raped an 18-year-old woman who had been walking her dog along the Honeybourne Line on Sunday 29 April 1990.
Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary arrested Shakespeare on Sunday 15 August and he was charged last night.
He was remanded in police custody and is due to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 17 August.
The victim has been informed of the recent developments.
The case was reopened by Gloucestershire Constabulary in 2007 with renewed appeals for information, including on national television in 2008.
