New Mayor of Stroud revealed

THE next Mayor of Stroud was revealed after Kevin Cranston recently stepped down.

Councillor Stella Parkes, who represents Central Ward, was unanimously voted in as Mayor at the Town Council meeting last night (Monday).

Stroud’s new mayor has pledged to do all she can to make the town centre a greener place that is accessible to all.

Councillor Parkes, who worked in corporate communications, joined the council 18 months ago.

She currently chairs the Regeneration Committee.

Born and bred in Stroud, Councillor Parkes moved away from the town to go to college and returned in the mid 1980s.

She has been involved in the charity sector and is currently chair of local environmental charity, Stroud Valleys Project.

She has recently stepped down as director of the Biodynamic Land Trust.

“I have always been passionate about the environment, farming and community,” said Councillor Parkes.

“My ambition as mayor is to help nurture a thriving town centre that’s accessible for everyone and is a greener place.”

Councillor Parkes believes the Town Council’s role to support community organisations is even more vital as people struggle with the rising cost of living.

“The Town Council provides ongoing grants to organisations such as Homestart and Citizens Advice in Stroud as well as a range of community and small grants to voluntary organisations.

Groups such as these are critical at a time when so many people on limited incomes are struggling to make ends meet.”

Councillor Camilla Hale (Valley Ward) was unanimously re-elected as Deputy Mayor.
