NOSTALGIA: Charlie Barnet’s and Mac Fisheries in Cirencester

At one point in time, it was possible to buy fresh fish and seafood in Cirencester without having to visit a supermarket, writes Robert Heaven.

Many people will remember Charlie Barnet’s on the corner of the West Market Place which also sold Game and exotics such as gulls’ eggs.

Mac Fisheries in Cricklade Street was founded by Lord Leverhulme at the end of the First World War and served customers right through the war years and the rationing of the 1950s.

In April 1979, due to a sell out to International Stores, all the wet fish shops were simply closed down within three months.
