SCAMMERS have started targeting the vulnerable in the Cotswolds during the coronavirus lockdown.

Gloucestershire Constabulary say they are aware of a number of residents reportedly receiving the same coronavirus-related telephone scam call over recent days.

A number of calls were reported in the Cirencester and Cheltenham areas on Monday, however, the force believes that the scammers may also be targeting other areas of the county.

In each case a recorded message greeted the receiver, offering the change to obtain face masks if they pressed 1 on the keypad, which would take the person through to the ‘payments department’.

None of those who reported the scam went any further but the police say they are aware that others, particularly the vulnerable, may fall victim to this.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: “Please share this warning message with anyone you feel would benefit.

“During these difficult times, always be alert with fraudsters looking to take advantage.

“It is important to treat unsolicited message with a degree of suspicion.”

Anyone who has fallen victim to a scam can report it via 101 or Action Fruad on 0300 123 2040.
